Orchard Road is perhaps best known amongst Singaporeans and arguably, even folks around the world as a retail paradise, where rows of shopping malls both old and spanking new line the streets as far as the eye can see. It is also where one can find swanky hotels and private residences, giving the area a reputation for being a tad bourgeois — a playground for the rich. While there’s some degree of truth in that, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Orchard is completely devoid of down-to-earth charm. If you’re considering looking for a room for rent in Orchard, here’s what you can expect everyday life to look like beyond the glitz and glamour.

Easy Commute to Singapore’s CBD

Coliwoo Orchard is a service apartment in Orchard located at Mount Elizabeth Link, which is just a few minutes away from Orchard Road on foot. This is where you’ll find no shortage of public transportation options, from bus stops servicing a large number of routes around the country, to the nearby Somerset and Orchard MRT stations that will take you to Singapore’s CBD in mere minutes. This is a great option for residents working in the city; the last thing anyone wants to do is endure a long, crowded commute to work early in the morning.

Boutique Retail

It’s perhaps inevitable that your time in Orchard will be spent exploring its many retail options. However, beyond the usual branded outlets, there are also modest but no less glamorous shops that you can consider. For instance, Coliwoo Orchard is a short walk away from Decathlon Orchard, home of some of the most affordable sports equipment anywhere. Keen to support local businesses? Take a short trip down to *SCAPE where local fashion blogshops and other businesses set up shop selling unique and sometimes handmade apparel. Shopping locally is also a great way to save a dollar, especially if you’re paying your own rent for your rental apartment in Singapore. That being said, if you wish to treat yourself every now and then to, say, an expensive meal, Orchard is basically a treasure trove of culinary gems, from the 2 Michelin-starred Shisen Hanten in Mandarin Orchard, to every Singaporean’s favourite Din Tai Fung.

Nature in the Concrete Jungle

Fort Canning Park

At first glance, Orchard seems to be nothing but towering skyscrapers and a sea of traffic and people, but Singapore is well known for its faithful preservation of nature all over the country despite its limited space. Just a few bus stops away, for example, is the iconic Fort Canning Park, a sprawling piece of greenery and history interspersed with lush fields where movie screenings are occasionally held. It is also where you can learn more about life in Singapore during World War II, namely, the role Fort Canning played during the Japanese invasion of Singapore. Venture further down south and you’ll find the Singapore River stretching from Tanglin to Fullerton. At the latter, you’ll find our national icon, the Merlion, sitting in all its glory facing Marina Bay Sands. Jogging along the river at night with that view is truly rewarding indeed — all these and more can be easily accessed from our service apartment in Orchard.
